Content Aware Coding for Mobile TV

What is CACMTV?

The project Content Aware Coding for Mobile TV was initiated in March 2009. It deals with technical and dramaturgical aspects of mobile television broadcasting. Involved with the project are two departments of the University of Vienna. For a detailed project description and the research aspects, see Research. In our research efforts in mobile multimedia quality, we have developed the SubjectivePlayer for Android, a video player supporting the assessment of subjective quality, made for testing on the go. While the app is still in development, it is released as an open source project and thus open for contributions. The source code is available under the GPL v2 license. For more informations, check out the project's homepage at Google Code, where you can find downloads and an extensive manual.

Personal news: Shelley Buchinger has also been designated as deputy leader of a working group in QualiNet, a European network on Quality of Experience in Multimedia Systems and Services (COST IC 1003 programme). In March, Dr. Buchinger will also receive one of the doc.awards 2010.

In December, we presented a short abstract at the Third Euro-NF IA.7.5 Workshop on Socio-Economic Issues of Networks of the Future in Gent, Belgium.
Currently, we are focusing on preparing the video content we have created for further experiments and new publications.
Moreover, the project has been extended for another year, which will allow the team to work continuously towards new publications and research results.

November 5th, 2010

Our content production phase is finished. A database of made-for-mobile videos has been created with professional support from our partners. This material will be made available for the scientific community when first experiments are finished. Have a first look at the videos here.

June 30th, 2010

A poster on the topic of Channel Switching Times has been presented at the QoMEX workshop 2010. Also, two papers were presented at the EuroITV conference. Currently, the stage of content production is almost finished. In the near future, subjective tests will be performed in order to analyze perceived video quality in mobile television.

We submitted papers for the EuroITV2010 and the QoMEX2010, covering the topics of a peer to peer mobile television recovery system and the acceptance of channel switching delays in mobile TV.

November 5th, 2009
Our VPQM '10 submission with the topic "Slider vs. Glove" has been accepted.

September 9th, 2009
We submitted an extended abstract for the VPQM '10, which will take place in Scottsdale, Arizona on January 13-15th.

We are going online. A framework for a homepage was built and we are starting to upload content.
